DuPont State Forest The forest encompasses 10,268 acres in Henderson and Transylvania counties. It is situated in the Little River valley and includes waterfalls and 80 miles of roads and trails wandering through mountainous terrain. The forest is open to the public for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Fishing is allowed with a valid NC fishing license. Hunting is by special permit only, issued by a permit agent of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. The North Carolina Division of Forest Resources manages the forest. Chimney Rock Park Chimney Rock Park is a natural attraction covering 1000 acres. On a clear day the view spans as far as Kings Mountain, seventy-five miles to the east. You can take the elevator 26 stories inside the mountain to reach the top of the Chimney and the trails. Chimney Rock Park hosts special events throughout the year, including an Easter sunrise service, an Earth Day celebration, demonstrations, and guided nature walks. Chimney Rock Park is located 14 miles east of Hendersonville.

Foothills Trail Conference The foothills trail follows the North and South Carolina state lines, skirting the northern shores of Lake Jocassee through the Jocassee Gorges region. The foothills trail connects Table Rock and Oconee State Parks in South Carolina while passing through Gorges State Park in North Carolina.

Holmes State Forest Holmes Educational State Forest offers a series of well-marked trails, accented by exhibits and displays depicting ecology of a managed forest. Pisgah National Forest has 501,691 acres stretching across the eastern edge of Western North Carolina's mountains. Sliding Rock is a naturally occurring 60-foot waterslide with a seven-foot deep pool that has been developed by the US Forest Service into a recreation area. Sliding Rock is extremely popular on hot summer weekends. But, as the picture above shows, there are those willing to slide even on cool fall weekends. You can either slide yourself or watch others do it from an observation deck opposite the slide.Directions: From the intersection of US 276 and US 64 in Pisgah Forest, NC, go about eight miles north on US 276. You will pass Looking Glass Falls on the right after five miles. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park covers seven counties in North Carolina, with the northern fringe of the Smokies in Tennessee. The 520,000-acre park is one of the largest wilderness areas in the Eastern United States, covering more than 88 square miles. The park contains some of the highest peaks in the East, with elevations in excess of 6,000 feet.
